Georg Wilhelm Claussen (born June 5, 1912 in Hamburg ; † March 21, 2013 there ) was a German entrepreneur and patron .

Life

Georg W. Claussen was the son of Carl Claussen and his wife Martha geb. Powder maker. Martha was a niece of Oscar Troplowitz , the main shareholder of the chemical factory P. Beiersdorf & Co. at that time. a. the products Nivea , Labello and Leukoplast developed and produced.

After completing a commercial apprenticeship and spending some time abroad, including with a chemical-pharmaceutical company in Great Britain, Claussen joined the Beiersdorf company in 1938, where his father was the CEO. In 1952 he became a deputy member of the board, in 1954 a full member and spokesman for the board. From 1957 to 1979 he was CEO of Beiersdorf AG. In 1979 he moved to the supervisory board and remained its chairman until 1987. From 1989 until his death he was honorary chairman of Beiersdorf AG. Claussen died on March 21, 2013 in Hamburg.

Services

During his time as CEO, Beiersdorf AG's sales grew by around thirty times. According to Claussens, the biggest challenge during this time was the conversion of the sales system from its own representatives to wholesalers. The best-known brands that Claussen introduced include 8x4 , atrix and Eucerin .

In addition to his many years of work for Beiersdorf AG, Georg Wilhelm Claussen appeared as a promoter of science, research, education, and art and culture. In 1982 he founded the Claussen Foundation for this purpose, which was renamed the Claussen Simon Foundation in 1999 as part of the donation by his cousin Ebba Simon .

Georg Wilhelm Claussen was a member of numerous committees and societies, such as the Hamburg University Society, the Monument Council of the City of Hamburg, the Foundation for the Hamburg Art Collections and the Museum of Art and Industry. For more than three decades he was a member of the Presidium of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the board of trustees and board member of the Stifterverband.

Awards

Georg W. Claussen is the recipient of the Great Federal Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Richard Merton Badge of Honor of the Stifterverband and the Constitutional Portuguese Gold of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
