Martina Werner (born December 28, 1961 in Kassel ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2014 to 2019 she was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Origin and professional career

Werner was born in 1961 as the daughter of a machinist and a hairdresser . She grew up with her brother in Kassel- Bettenhausen and graduated from the Herderschule in Kassel in 1982 .

Then she completed an apprenticeship as a hotel clerk . From 1985 to 1991 she studied economics at the Kassel University of Applied Sciences (degree: Diplom-Ökonomin ). She then worked for a short time in the marketing department of the Kassel Transport and Supply Company (KVV) and in 1992 became a consultant at the Kassel Region Economic Development Corporation. Since the end of 2001 she has been working as a specialist service manager in investment management in the Kassel district .

Werner is married and lives in the Niestetal community in the Kassel district.

Party career

She was initially a member of the Socialist Youth of Germany - Die Falken and joined the SPD in 1982. From 1993 to 1999 she was chairwoman of the local association Kassel-Bettenhausen. In addition, she was a member of the sub-district executive and committee in Kassel. Since 2003 she has been deputy SPD district chairwoman for Hessen-Nord and since 2008 chairwoman of the Niestetal local association.

MPs

Werner is active in local politics. From 1989 to 1992 she was a city councilor for Kassel. She has been the community representative in Niestetal since 2006. In the mayoral election in 2009 in Spangenberg, North Hesse, in the Schwalm-Eder district, she lost 49.6 percent to the incumbent Peter Tigges (CDU), who achieved 50.4 percent.

In the 8th European elections in 2014 she ran as the successor to Barbara Weiler on the list position 16, which she previously occupied at the SPD European delegates' conference in Berlin. She was then elected to the European Parliament on May 25, 2014. There she was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and Deputy to the Committee on International Trade and the Delegation for Relations with Canada. She was not re-elected in the 2019 European elections.

She is a member of ver.di , IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie , the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), the Förderverein Waldauer Enten-Kirmes eV, Technik-Museum Kassel eV and TSV Heiligenrode eV she volunteered for many years as a cashier at the AWO's Kasseler Jugendring.
