Catholic Martinus Church

The Catholic Martinus Church is located between Rudolstädter Straße, Brunnengasse and Am Alten Brunnen in Dittelstedt , a district of the Thuringian capital Erfurt . Their patron saint is Martin von Tours . It belongs to the parish of Melchendorf .

history

The church was built in 1682 instead of a previous building that was demolished in 1647. In 1812 a church tower was added next to it. It was built from the stone of the demolished, 13th century Corpus Christi chapel on the Petersberg , which was in the field of fire of the Petersberg Citadel and was therefore razed. Before that, the bells hung in a free-standing belfry . In 1813 the church was devastated by French troops and then restored.

In 1935, a reconstruction of the church. In the Second World War it was damaged and then restored. In 1987 another renovation took place. As part of the renovation of the tower, altar and stations of the cross in 2010, an electronic organ was also purchased. The copper tower ball and the gilded tower cross were also refurbished.

Building description

With a gable roof covered, west hipped hall church has a three-sided final in the East. The octagonal church tower made of ashlar is added there. His pointed helmet is covered with slate . The nave has 4 arched windows on the long sides . An epitaph by Abbot Casselmann († 1737) from the Erfurt Benedictine monastery closes the former entrance on the outside of the south wall.

Furnishing

The baroque altar and the stations of the cross come from the Corpus Christi chapel. In the church there is a small relief depicting Mary and John from around 1600.
