Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker (also literalized Martynas Švėgžda von Bekkeris * 1967 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian violinist and music teacher .

Live and act

Martynas Švėgžda received his first violin lessons at the age of five from his grandmother E. Strazdas-Bekeriene, a student of Leopold von Auer , Jan Mařák and Jacques Thibaud . He gave his first recital at the age of seven and performed with the Vilnius Symphony Orchestra at the age of eleven .

From 1973 he graduated from the National Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Art School and then studied from 1986 to 1989 at the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy with Raimundas Katlius . In the following years he was taught by Igor Oistrach , Boris Garlitsky , Volker Banfield , Ralf Gothóni and Detlef Kraus , among others , and in 1996 continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Mark Lubotsky , where he took the concert exam.

Since 1990 von Bekker has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, in the USA and in Asia. From 1991 to 1997 he played together in the Coloris piano trio and won first prizes with the trio at the Elise Meyer Foundation and the Second Hausmann Music Competition in Hamburg. In 1993 he played the world premiere of the 1st Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Alfred-Schnittke with the Symphony Orchestra of the Hamburg University of Music .

Von Bekker has performed with the following orchestras, among others: the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra , the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra , the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg New Philharmonic, as well as orchestras in Finland and Indonesia. He gave concerts with artists such as Hans-Dieter Baum, Igor Uryash, Nikolai Lugansky , Detlef Kraus , Yuri Mazurkevich, Duncan McTier and George Tchitchinadze, among others in the Laeiszhalle Hamburg , the Schauspielhaus Berlin , at UNESCO in Paris and in the Tchaïkovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and at various music festivals.

In 2001 he founded and directed the international and interdisciplinary "Alternative Classical Music Festivals" in Lithuania, which took place until 2011, where he also gave master classes. In 2015 he initiated the establishment of the interdisciplinary art academy “Alternative Academy of Arts” in Hamburg.

From 2003 to 2017 von Bekker was a lecturer at the Lithuanian Music and Theater Academy . From 2009 to 2010 he was a Boston Fulbright Scholar Lecturer at the Boston University College of Fine Arts, School of Music. Since 2016 he has been teaching at the Johannes Brahms Conservatory in Hamburg.

Von Bekker also works as a composer.
