Mary Frances Pratt CC (birth name: West) (born March 15, 1935 in Fredericton , New Brunswick , Canada , † August 14, 2018 ) was a Canadian painter who was best known for her still lifes .

Life

Mary Pratt was one of two daughters of a lawyer who in the years 1952 to 1958 Minister of Justice of the province was New Brunswick. She studied performing arts at Mount Allison University and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . During her studies she met her first husband, the artist Christopher Pratt. The couple married in 1958 and had four children in the years that followed. In 1964 the family moved to St. John's on the island of Newfoundland . In 1967 she had her first solo exhibition at Memorial University Art Gallery in St. John's. The couple separated in 1990.

Since the 1980s Pratt has written essays and articles for Canadian newspapers such as The Globe and Mail in Toronto and for Canadian magazines. Her work has been shown in Canada's major galleries and published in magazines.

Until her death in August 2018, Pratt was married to the American teacher and artist James Rosen.
