Masa Yamamoto ( Japanese 山 本 昌 , Yamamoto Masa , actually 山 本 昌 広 , Yamamoto Masahiro ; born August 11, 1965 in Chigasaki , Kanagawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese baseball player on the position of pitcher . He has played for the Chūnichi Dragons in the Japanese Central League since making his professional debut in 1986 . In 1994 he won the Sawamura-shō for the best pitcher in the league, twice (1994 and 1997) he was included in the Best Nine of the Ce League.

Yamamoto attended the Fujisawa high school of the Nihon Daigaku , which did not qualify for the Kōshien in his time . In the 1983 draft , Yamamoto came to Chūnichi in the fifth round. He made his first-team debut at the end of the 1986 season when he threw two-thirds innings against Yakult in Jingū Stadium; However, it was not used more often until 1988. From the 1989 season onwards, it was part of the Dragons' core rotation with mostly over 20 starts per season.

Yamamoto had his most successful time in the 1990s, when he led the Central League three times in wins (1993, 1994 and 1997) and was also awarded the Sawamura Prize for Best Pitcher in 1994. But he remained a reliable starting pitcher with usually more than 100 innings thrown per season. Yamamoto took part in the All-Star Game for the Ce League six times (1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2004) . In 2006 Yamamoto threw a no-hitter in a home game against Hanshin .

In the season 2007 Yamamoto threw with an ERA over 5 although weak (2 W - 10 L in 18 starts), but could celebrate with his team the championship title in the Nihon Series - the first for Chūnichi since 1954. 2008 Yamamoto was better in again Form and became the 24th pitcher in Japanese professional baseball on August 4, 2008 to have 200 career wins. From 2009 the veteran was used less often, but in 2010 he contributed to a strong season for the Dragons with five wins in eight missions.
