The masked banner fish ( Heniochus monoceros ) is a species from the butterfly fish family .

The fish has a white, high-backed and laterally flattened body. The front, white part of the dorsal fin is not drawn out as long as in other banner fish. From there, three broad, black stripes extend to the root of the caudal fin, to the black pelvic fins and to the muzzle. It has a thorn-like outgrowth above each eye. The caudal fin, dorsal fin and the posterior part of the anal fin are yellow.

The masked banner fish reaches a length of 18 to 24 cm. It lives in the Indo-Pacific , from the coast of East Africa , over Mauritius to the coral reefs , in southern Japan , in the northeast of Papua New Guinea , the Great Barrier Reef , the coast of New South Wales and Tahitis . It can always be found near the coast and prefers reefs with heavy coral growth . Juvenile fish often live alone, while adults live in pairs.

It feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates .
