Massonia depressa is a plant of the genus Massonia in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet depressa comes from Latin and means 'depressed'.

description

Massonia depressa is a succulent geophyte that grows with spherical bulbs up to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The white onion scales are fleshy. The two against constantly arranged on the floor pressed leaves are green and have purple spots. Your fleshy, elongated to rounded leaf blade is up to 26 inches long and 15 inches wide. However, the leaves are often smaller.

The dense, cephalic inflorescence is up to 30 flowers . The bracts at the base are large and surround the inflorescence. The green flowers have a short stalk .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Systematics and distribution

Massonia depressa is widespread in South Africa from the Eastern Cape Province to the Free State Province in the Succulent Karoo .

The first description by Maarten Houttuyn was published in 1780.

Synonyms are Massonia latifolia L.f. (1782), Massonia coronata Jacq. (1804), Massonia obovata Jacq. (1804), Massonia sanguinea Jacq. (1804), Massonia grandifolia Ker Gawl.
