criticism

Aria Nejati from Hiphop.de praised Mastermind as " perhaps Rick Ross' best album ". You have to be " receptive to Ross' s way " because he offers " thematically exactly what you expect from him, what he can do and what you can chalk up ". Particularly noteworthy is Sanctified with Kanye West , on which " a gospel intro leads to a dark striphymn ". Remember " an elaborated version of the Yeezus concept, which now works in this form on normal rap albums ".

The e-zine Laut.de rated Mastermind with four out of a possible five rating points. Editor David Maurer explained that if the listener could get involved, “ switch off his brain as far as possible and only listen to the fat sounds from the speakers ”, enthused Rick Ross “ in all his simplicity even in the sixth attempt ”. " Sophisticated storytelling " is not one of the rapper's strengths. In Devil Is A Lie, for example, Ross tells “ not a tricky story about rise and fall, about loyalty and deceit ”, but rather takes the listener “ into his aloof bigwig empire of cocaine, money, power and luxury cars ”. The only exception is the piece Nobody , in which the rapper processes a failed assassination attempt against him from January 2013. The productions of Blk & Wht and What A Shame are described by Maurer as " mighty beats " that represent the " ideal basis for [Ross'] voluminous, accustomed hoarse organ ".
