Mathias Wilhelm von Haan

Mathias Wilhelm Haan , from 1779 Ritter von Haan , (born November 27, 1737 in Vienna ; † December 10, 1816 ibid) was an Austrian lawyer , privy councilor , and statesman .

Life

Haan came from Alsace , from a noble family . He studied law . After a fast career, he became court advisor to the highest judicial authority in 1775 , then vice-president of the Lower Austrian appellate court in 1792, and three years later president of the higher regional court . In 1795 Emperor Franz II appointed him supreme judge and president of the Lower Austrian regional law. In 1797 he was first vice-president of the united court commission in political and judicial law matters and finally in 1809 president of this commission.

Haan worked among other things on the Criminal Code of the Austrian States and on the General Civil Code . In 1779 he was raised to the hereditary knighthood and at the same time awarded the Grand Cross of the ku St. Stephen's Order and appointed to the Privy Council .
