Mats Malm
Mats Ulrik Malm (born May 10, 1964 ) is a Swedish Scandinavian scholar , literary historian , university professor and translator . Malm has been a member of the Swedish Academy since December 2018 and its permanent secretary and spokesperson since June 2019 .
Life and career
Malm studied Scandinavian Studies at the University of Gothenburg , where he also received his doctorate in 1987 . In the 1998/99 academic year he was visiting professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since 2004 he has been Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Gothenburg. He also became head of a large-scale national digitization project called Litteraturbanken , which aims to make large parts of older Swedish literature generally accessible online. As an expert for digital humanities , Malm gave a guest lecture in the Marbach literature archive on April 9, 2019 .
As a Scandinavian translator, the literary scholar has translated some Icelandic sagas into Swedish. Malm has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Literature, History and Antiquities since 2012 . He is also a board member of Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet, the Swedish national society for literary studies and a member of the Royal Society for Science and Literature in Gothenburg . On October 18, 2018, Malm was elected a member of the Swedish Academy, where on December 20, 2018, he succeeded Klas Östergren in seat no. 11 took over. On April 26, 2019, it was announced that Malm had been elected to succeed Anders Olsson as the new Permanent Secretary and Spokesman of the Swedish Academy. He will take up office on June 1, 2019 and has promised to continue the consolidation work that has already started there.
