Iossif Issajewitsch Gitelson ( Russian Иосиф Исаевич Гительзон ; born July 6, 1928 in Samara ) is a Russian biophysicist and university professor .

Life

Gitelson studied at the medical faculty of the Krasnoyarsk Medical Institute with graduation in 1952. As early as 1949 he had organized biophysical examinations together with Ivan Alexandrowitsch Terskow . In 1951 he had completed a correspondence course at the Biological Faculty of Lomonosov University in Moscow . After graduation, he worked as a hematologist in the Krasnoyarsk blood transfusion station .

In 1953 Gitelson became an assistant and then a lecturer at the Krasnoyarsk Agricultural Institute . In 1955 he defended his candidate dissertation on blood testing with spectrophotometry for the doctorate candidate in biological sciences .

In 1957, Gitelson became a senior scientist at the Biophysics Laboratory of the Institute of Physics of the Siberian Department (SO) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) in Krasnoyarsk. In 1960 he defended his doctoral dissertation on blood testing using the photoelectric erythrogram method to characterize the erythrocyte population for a doctorate in medical science . Then in 1961 he became head of the laboratory for photobiology of the Institute for Physics of the SO of the AN-SSSR. In 1965 he became professor and head of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry of Humans and Animals at the State University of Krasnoyarsk, which was merged into the Siberian Federal University of Krasnoyarsk in 2006. He developed methods and devices for studying the bioluminescence of marine ecosystems . He took part in oceanographic expeditions in the Pacific , Atlantic , Indian Ocean and Arctic Ocean and described the principles of the observed bioluminescence. In 1979 he was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR.

In 1981 Gitelson became head of the photobiology laboratory of the new institute of biophysics of the SO of the AN-SSSR in Krasnoyarsk, whose director he became in 1984. He studied closed ecosystems and developed the BIOS project for the study of the conditions in a closed ecosystem for human survival in a hostile environment and in space . 1995–1998 he developed the Bioalarm project for the monitoring of marine ecosystems and early warning of anthropogenic and natural anomalies. In 1990 he was elected a full member of the AN-SSSR.

In 1996 he left the director's office and is an advisor to the Institute for Biophysics. 1996-1998 he was a visiting scientist at the Ames Research Center of NASA . He is Scientific Director of the Institute for Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology of the Siberian Federal University and Professor of the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry there. He is a member of the Commission against Pseudoscience and Scientific Falsification of the RAN, founded by Vitali Lasarewitsch Ginsburg in 1988 . He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and Vice-chairman of the COSPAR Committee for Life Sciences. He is considered the founder of the Krasnoyarsk School of Ecological Biophysics.
