Sture Allén ( pronunciation : [ ˌstʉːɹə aˈleːn ], born December 31, 1928 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish linguist .

Life

He is Emeritus Professor of Gothenburg University , where he was from 1972 to 1993 with computational linguistics has employed. He has been a member of the Swedish Academy since 1980 and was Permanent Secretary from 1986 to 1999. He was one of the opponents in the Salman Rushdie affair, which resulted in Kerstin Ekman , Lars Gyllensten and Werner Aspenström leaving the academy. He has also been a member of the Royal Society of Science and Literature in Gothenburg since 1976 , the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies since 1988 , the Norwegian Academy of Sciences since 1994 and the Finnish Academy of Sciences since 2000 . In 1989 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In the 1970s he became known internationally for his pioneering work in the field of computational linguistics and lexigraphy. Between 1970–1980 he published the Nusvensk frekvensordbok ( New Swedish Frequency Dictionary ), in which over a million words and expressions from the Stockholm , Malmö and Gothenburg daily newspapers were electronically recorded and analyzed. In 1975 he founded a language database (språkbanken) on behalf of the Swedish government , in which all electronic texts were to be collected, stored, processed and made available. Despite his research in the field of computational linguistics, Allén has also made a name for himself in language maintenance and always sees his work as humanistic and not technical research.
