First stations
Originally from the youth academy of Southampton FC , Matt Mills made his professional debut on September 18, 2004 for the second division side Coventry City (0-0 against Rotherham United ), for whom he was on loan at the time. After another loan in the second half of the 2004/05 season to the third division AFC Bournemouth , he played four league games for Southampton FC in the Football League Championship 2005/06 before moving to Manchester City on January 31, 2006 . For his new club he played his first game in the Premier League 2005/06 on March 25, 2006 (2-0 defeat at Chelsea ). Since he remained up to a further use on October 21, 2006 against Wigan Athletic without match practice, he was loaned to the second division club Colchester United on January 26, 2007 . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, another loan to the third division Doncaster Rovers followed . With the Rovers, he achieved promotion to the second division thanks to a 1-0 win in the play-off final against Leeds United .
Doncaster Rovers and Reading FC
After his convincing performance last season, Doncaster announced the signing of Matt Mills on July 31, 2008, for a club record transfer of £ 300,000. With the promoted team he secured himself in the Football League Championship 2008/09 as fourth in the table, relegation, but decided after this success to another move and signed on August 5, 2009 for a transfer of £ 2,000,000 a contract with Reading FC . With his new team he spent the following two seasons in the second division. 2010/11 he missed promotion to the Premier League with Reading by a 2: 4 defeat in the play-off final against Swansea City .
Leicester City and Bolton Wanderers
On July 8, 2011 Mills moved to league rivals Leicester City and signed a four-year contract. After Nigel Pearson had replaced Sven-Göran Eriksson as coach of the second division club in November 2011 , Mills lost his position as team captain and was no longer used by Pearson. As a result, after just a year, he announced his departure from Leicester and signed with the Bolton Wanderers . With the relegated from the Premier League he missed the play-offs in 2012/13 as a table seventh only because of the worse goal difference. In the subsequent two seasons Bolton could not build on this performance and was far from a return to the first division.
Nottingham Forest
On July 1, 2015, Mills joined Nottingham Forest on a free transfer .
