Matthew Kenneth Rhule (* 31 January 1975 in New York City , New York ) is an American American football trainer. He is currently the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in the NFL . Prior to that, he has trained several colleges , including Temple University and Baylor University .

Career

Rhule played as a linebacker while in high school . After graduating, he went to Pennsylvania State University . There he played until his Bachelor's degree in 1997. In 1998, Rhule became an assistant coach, first as a linebacker coach at Albright College, then as a defensive line coach at the University at Buffalo . This was followed by positions at UCLA and Western Carolina University .

In 2006 Rhule joined Temple University in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . There he was initially coach of the defensive line, but from 2008 he was promoted to offensive coordinator . After a year with the New York Giants , he became the head coach of Temple University in 2013. In his time as head coach, he was able to win a total of 28 games and only lost 23. He also won a conference championship with them. On December 6, 2016, Rhule became the new head coach at Baylor University in Waco , Texas . He won a total of 19 games that faced 18 losses and a Texas Bowl. He was also named Trainer of the Year 2019 for the Big 12 Conference .

On January 7, 2020, Rhule was introduced as the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers . He succeeds Ron Rivera .
