Matthew Carl

Matthäus Carl , occasionally Also Mathias Carl (* probably around 1550 in Augsburg ; † 1609 in Amberg ) was a German goldsmith and engraver . Signature MC

Carl came to Nuremberg around 1580 , where he was awarded the master's certificate from the goldsmith's guild as early as 1585 . In the same year Carl was also able to acquire the citizenship letter .

In 1587, Elector Christian I appointed Carl as a goldsmith at his court with the permission of the Nuremberg Council. Also with the approval of the city of Nuremberg, Carl designed and minted 300 gold guilders in 1597 for the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg , Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . Carl also carried out similar orders for Elector Friedrich IV and his governor in Upper Palatinate, Prince Christian I.

With the income from these orders, Carl bought himself as a silent partner in Fichtelberger and Upper Palatinate mines. In 1603 Carl withdrew into private life and settled in Amberg. He died there in 1609 at the age of less than 60.
