Matthew von Normann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthäus von Normann (* unknown; † April 25, 1556 ; also Matthäus Normann ) was a German lawyer. He put together a collection of the law applicable to complaints .

Life

Matthew Normann came from the rügischen knights of Normann . His father Heinrich von Normann was guardian of Jasmund .

Not much is known about the life of Matthäus von Normann. In any case, he worked as a court clerk (“Notarius”) under several Landvögte von Rügen , namely under Waldemar zu Putbus , Degener Buggenhagen , Balthasar von Jasmund and Wilken von Platen . He also studied at the University of Greifswald (occupied for 1512).

According to the current state of research, Matthäus von Normann is identical to a Mathis Narmann , who is attested as a Protestant pastor in Patzig on Rügen for 1534/1535 , and as a cleric of the Roskilde diocese as early as 1520 (Rügen belonged to the Roskilde diocese).

In contrast, earlier research assumed that Normann was identical to Matthäus von Normann, who was appointed governor on Rügen around 1554. According to Theodor Pyl , he would have held this office until 1569. According to the current state of research, the Landvogt Matthäus von Normann is a relative of the same name from the Tribberatz family of the von Normann family.

Origin and tradition

Since 1522, Matthäus von Normann compiled a collection of the law applicable to Rügen. He began the first manuscript in 1522 and finished it between 1525 and 1531. From 1546 he added and expanded his collection and handed it over to Duke Philip I of Pomerania with the request that the latter should formally confirm the collection as a law. Such a formal introduction never came about; Another attempt in 1554 was unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, this legal book gained great importance in legal practice. To be sure, it was initially only distributed in manuscripts. It was not published until 1777 by Thomas Heinrich Gadebusch under the title Matthäus von Normanns Wendisch-Rügianischer Landgebrauch .

It was not until 1977 that Normann's original manuscript, which he had begun in 1522, reappeared. It could not yet be taken into account by older research, especially not by Georg Frommhold in his edition Das Rügische Recht by Matthäus Normann based on the shorter manuscripts (1896). The original manuscript is now in the possession of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .

meaning

According to Martin Wehrmann , thanks to Normann's legal code, the old German legal habits were able to assert themselves against Roman law on Rügen. In his article on Matthäus von Normann in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, Theodor Pyl emphasizes the importance of the legal book for Pomeranian legal history and for research into the Low German language.

According to Dieter Pötschke, Normann's legal book should contain legal measures from Danish law, Schwerin land law , the law of the Sachsenspiegel , Wendish law and what he called Rügische customary law .
