The Matthäuskirche is the main Evangelical Lutheran church in Lehrte , Hanover region (An der Masch 9). Your parish of the same name belongs to the Burgdorf parish .

history

In the old village of Lehrte there is still the little St. Nicholas Church, which is documented for 1302 (Osterstraße 3). The year of the founding of this chapel is not exactly verifiable, but it should not have been before 1147. It belonged to the Archdeaconate of St. Martin in Lühnde , was a branch church of St. Nikolaus in Steinwedel and since 1366 parish church .

In the 1530s, the Lutheran Reformation was introduced in Lehrte, as in all Guelph territories .

With the development of Lehrte into a railway junction and industrial location in the 19th century, the population grew by leaps and bounds and the center of the new city shifted to the north. Against the initial resistance of the long-established population, plans to expand the village church were abandoned and a new building in a more central location was decided. The new church was built in 1874/76 and was named after the evangelist Matthew .

architecture

The Lehrter Matthäuskirche is the work of Conrad Wilhelm Hase . It is a neo-Gothic hall church made of brick with a short transept and a polygonal apse . The portal front with the high tower is richly decorated with gables , blind arches , arcade friezes , corner and flank towers. The whole building is inspired by the forms of the north German brick Gothic .
