Matthew A. Cherry
Matthew Alexander Cherry (born December 14, 1981 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American director and former American football player on the position of wide receiver . His film Hair Love was in 2020 for the Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film Award.
Career
Cherry attended the University of Akron from 2000 to 2003 , where he played college football for the Akron Zips . In total, he caught 149 passes for 1997 yards . In 2003 he was elected to the 2nd team All- MAC , the same year when he set the school record for punt return yards in one season (305) as a punt returner and also brought back three punts for touchdown . He then went to the National Football League (NFL), where he switched between the active squad and the Practice Squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars , Cincinnati Bengals , Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens . However, he never played in a game.
In 2007 he ended his NFL career and turned down offers from the Canadian Football League (CFL) to switch to the film industry. He achieved his first major success with the film 9 Rides, which was filmed exclusively on the iPhone 6 . His film Hair Love won in 2020 the Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film . This was funded with $ 300,000 previously collected at Kickstarter.com , the highest amount ever for a short film on the platform.
