Matthew Arthur, 1st Baron Glenarthur (March 9, 1852 - September 23, 1928 ), from 1903 to 1918 Sir Matthew Arthur, 1st Baronet , was a Scottish businessman and peer .

Family and title

Arthur was the son of James Arthur from Carlung in Ayrshire and Barshaw in Renfrewshire , founder of the clothing retailer Arthur & Co. His mother was Jane Glen, a daughter of Thomas Glen of Thornhill , Renfrewshire. He had three brothers. Arthur married Janet McGrigor, daughter of Alexander Bennett McGrigor, in 1876. The marriage resulted in two sons. On January 10, 1903 Arthur was knighted as Baronet, of Carlung in the County of Ayr . On June 27, 1918 he was named Baron Glenarthur, of Carlung in the County of Ayr Peer and a member of the House of Lords . The title of the barony came about as a matronym and patronymic of his mother's maiden name and his father's surname.

Entrepreneurship

After studying law at the University of Glasgow , where he received his doctorate in law , Arthur was chairman of the family business Arthur and Co, the Lochgelly Iron and Coal Company and the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company (G & SWR) .

Other engagement

In addition to his commitment as an entrepreneur, Arthur was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers . He has also served as Justice of the Peace and Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant in Ayrshire and Glasgow , and headed the Western Infirmary , a teaching hospital in Glasgow.
