Matthew David Bates (born December 10, 1986 in Stockton ) is a former English football player . He played mostly as a central defender, but was also used in defensive midfield or on the right-back position.

Career

player

Born in Stockton-on-Tees and raised in Eaglescliffe , Bates began playing for Manchester United at a youth center at the age of nine . After a few years, the youth center was closed and Bates started playing for his home club, Middlesbrough FC . With this he won the 2003/04 FA Youth Cup and was then promoted to the 1st team. He made his league debut on December 6, 2004 (4 days before his 18th birthday) when he came on for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the 3-2 win over Manchester City . After his successful time as a loaner at Darlington, he made his breakthrough at Middlesbrough FC under manager Gareth Southgate .

In the 2006/07 season he was loaned to Ipswich Town , but injured in his second game and returned to Middlesbrough in January 2007. After a year break he was loaned to Norwich City in January 2008 , but had to return to Boro injured. His third knee operation followed in just 18 months. His first goal for Middlesbrough FC he scored on April 11, 2009 against relegation competitors from Hull , the game was won 3-1.

When Middlesbrough was relegated from the Premier League after the 2008-09 season, rumors arose that some clubs were interested in the defender. Despite the many interested Premier League clubs, Bates stayed with Middlesbrough FC and signed a new three-year contract.

The new season ended for Bates on July 25th when he sustained his fourth serious knee injury. After he was out for a year, he was appointed captain under manager Tony Mowbray in the 2010/11 season and thus had a regular seat guarantee. Bates showed his scoring danger and scored a total of three goals in the season. The 2011/12 season got off to a terrific start for the central defender, as after his great performance at the beginning he was named Player of the Month in September.

Trainer

Bates took over for the first time in April 2017 after the dismissal of Dave Jones on an interim basis at Hartlepool, which at that time was on a relegation place, the coaching post. Despite a win on the last day of the game, the club was relegated to the National League . For the 2017/18 season, Bates was part of the coaching team under head coach Craig Harrison , and after his dismissal in February 2018, he again took over the management of the first team on an interim basis. In the National League, he was named Coach of the Month in March 2018 after leading the team to a series of five undefeated games in a row (three wins, two draws) and following his relegation he became head coach in May 2018 promoted. His activity ended at the end of November 2018 when he was fired after a series of six defeats in a row.
