Matthew Tawo Mbu (born November 20, 1929 in Okundi , Cross River , † February 6, 2012 in London , United Kingdom ) was a Nigerian politician and diplomat .

Life

Matthew Mbu attended Okundi Primary School from 1937 to 1940, then Kakwagon Seminary School between 1941 and 1943. From 1955 he studied law at Middle Temple and University College London and in 1959 earned a Master of Laws .

Mbu began his political career in Nigeria before the country's independence as a member of parliament from 1952 to 1955, and from 1954 he was also Nigeria's Federal Minister of Labor. From 1955 to 1959 he served his country as High Commissioner in London (UK). In 1960, the year of independence, Mbu returned to national politics and was again a member of parliament until 1966. During this time he was also appointed Federal Minister for Defense and the Navy. In 1966 he became ambassador to Washington, DC ( USA ). In 1967 he was appointed chairman of the Eastern Nigeria Public Service Commission. From 1979 to 1981, Mbu was the first Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria People's Party before joining the National Party of Nigeria between 1981 and 1983 . In 1993 he was Nigeria's Foreign Minister for a short term. At times he was also Deputy Chancellor (Pro-Chancellor) of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife .

He was married and the father of six children.
