Matthias Büchel

Matthias Büchel (born September 9, 1912 in Walheim near Aachen ; † January 3, 1999 in Gütersloh ) was a German singer and conductor.

Life

Büchel grew up in Walheim, where his father worked as an organist. After his father's blindness, he succeeded him as organist. At the age of 17 he was the choirmaster of the parish in Lichtenbusch . From 1933 he studied at the Rheinische Musikhochschule Cologne and attended the music teacher seminar at the State University of Music. In 1936 he passed the private music teacher examination with a major in piano and from then on worked for two years as a piano teacher, choir director and lecturer at the social women's school in Aachen. He took singing lessons from Leo Nießen and the voice trainer Albert Greiner and completed two choir conducting courses in Berlin.

In 1938 he became assistant to the city choir director in Aachen Wilhelm Pitz . In 1939/40 he was entrusted by the then General Music Director Herbert von Karajan to represent him in rehearsing Bach's B minor Mass for a performance in Paris and Beethoven's Missa solemnis in Berlin. Herbert von Karajan put him in touch with the singing teacher Fritz Schlenker . From 1941 Büchel was drafted as a soldier and after an injury was taken to the hospital in Ahlen . After the end of the war, he was appointed artistic director of the municipal singing community and the Ahlen orchestra concerts.

After performing the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach with the ensemble and as an evangelist in the Martin Luther Church in Gütersloh in December 1945 , he was asked to take over the management of the Gütersloh Municipal Music Association. From 1946 he became the head of the music association, in 1950 he was appointed municipal music director. From 1958 to 1964 Büchel was also cantor at St. Pankratius Church in Gütersloh. Büchel also founded other ensembles in the vicinity with the Philharmonic Choir Münster and choirs in Recklinghausen and Bünde. With the Gütersloher Musikverein he went on choir trips to Berlin and Salzburg and made several records. For the Bertelsmann company he took over the development of the record ring with the repertoire for classical music.

In 1954 Büchel had to end his singing career due to diphtheria . In 1966 he began building the youth music school there on behalf of the Warendorf district, which he directed until 1977. After his retirement he continued to work as a choir director and took on a teaching position at the University of Münster. On June 20, 1978 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon from District Administrator Paul Lakämper . In 1982 he received the City of Gütersloh's Medal of Merit. He ended his active career on his 75th birthday. In 1987 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, for his high-level artistic and educational achievements.
