job

Matthias Franz has the following main areas of work:

  • Frequency, course, causes and prevention of mental / psychosomatic illnesses
  • Development of attachment-oriented preventive intervention programs for separated families and single parents
  • Developmental psychological significance of the father, research on the consequences of war, consequences of childhood traumatization
  • Affect / emotion research, alexithymia , psychotherapy research

Under the name wir2 , Franz developed a prevention program for single parents with psychosocial stress and their children. This is a parenting training that is intended to help single parents gain more strength and self-confidence - for their lives as individuals who are solely responsible for their families. wir2 works in a bond-oriented and emotion- centered manner . The main goals of the 20 group lessons are to strengthen self-confidence, deepen the emotional relationship between mother and child, more security and competence as a parent, greater inner balance, more well-being, better handling of challenges, stress, conflicts and depression. The program is listed in the highest evidence category of the Green List Prevention . wir2 is now a program of the Walter Blüchert Foundation ; free courses with parallel childcare are offered in numerous municipalities and in psychosomatic rehabilitation clinics.

Political activities

In 2011 he published an anthology "New men - must that be?", Which deals with current questions and problems of the male life situation and the associated risks for society. Since 2010, he has been hosting the men's congress at Heinrich Heine University .

In the summer of 2012, Franz initiated an open letter to German politicians that was signed by over 600 people (as of July 21, 2012), including many doctors, lawyers and scientists. The letter refers to the social debate about the religiously motivated circumcision of underage boys (mostly children of Muslims and Jews ) in Germany, which was triggered by a judgment announced by the Cologne Regional Court in June 2012 . In it, Franz criticizes the “grave accusation” of representatives of the Jewish position that a ban on ritual circumcision would make Jewish life in Germany impossible. He argues, among other things, that religious freedom cannot “be a license to use (sexual) violence against boys who are unable to consent” and, referring to the information provided, postulates : “You don't hurt children!”. Dieter Graumann , chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany , called this a "suggestive slogan" and, in retrospect, criticized that the signatories of the "infamous letter [es]" had "become unequaled in an arrogance and delusional delusion about the circumcision ritual" .

In 2014 he published a book on medical, legal, cultural anthropological and psychoanalytic aspects of male circumcision. Because of his attitude towards ritual circumcision, Franz has been an ambassador for intaktiv eV since April 2017 . In May 2017, despite massive criticism from religious associations, he organized the first university congress on the subject of boy circumcision together with those affected. He worked on the AWMF guideline Phimosis and Paraphimosis (publisher Maximilian Stehr), which was published by the German Society for Pediatric Surgery in September 2017 .
