Johann Matthias Kager
Johann Matthias Kager (* 1575 in Munich , † 1634 in Augsburg ) was a German painter and master builder and temporarily mayor of Augsburg in the 17th century.
Life
From 1588 Kager did an apprenticeship with Jacob Jelle and then with the miniature painter Jörg Karl in Munich. He also learned from Friedrich Sustris in Munich . After he went on a study trip to Italy, he worked for the Bavarian Court building and furnishing the Munich Residence and the Jesuit Church. In Bavaria he became the court painter of Maximilian I of Bavaria. In 1597 he acquired the Munich master craftsman's license, but moved to Augsburg in 1603 and was granted citizenship there in the same year. He received his first public contracts from 1605. Numerous wall and panel paintings, miniatures, copperplate engravings and architectural designs were created in Augsburg. In 1611 he became a member of the Grand Council and in 1615 city painter. From 1631 until the occupation by Sweden, Kager was mayor of the city.
Act
Kager also attracted attention in other areas besides painting, for example through his work on public buildings. From 1605 to 1607 he created the exterior frescoes of the Weberhaus on Moritzplatz . From 1620 he was in charge of furnishing the Augsburg town hall. He designed the decorations for the " Golden Hall " in Augsburg City Hall, but they were largely destroyed in the Second World War. He provided pictures for the south-east of the princely rooms and for the council chamber. His work as an architect has not yet been adequately researched.
Works
Although much of Kager's work was destroyed or lost, some of the paintings still survive today. So he painted altarpieces in some Augsburg churches:
- Catholic Holy Cross ("Tempelgang Mariae", 1616)
- St. Peter ("Christ as Good Shepherd", 1625)
- Bfl. Ordinariate ("Adoration of the Magi", 1610, from the cathedral)
- St. Ulrich and Afra (“Adoration of the Magi”, 1609).
- Works as a sculptor on the side altars of the Andrichsfurt parish church
He created high altar paintings nationwide in:
- St. Sebald Schwabach ("Glorification of Mary", 1614)
- Parish church of Aldersbach Monastery ("Lactatio Bernardi", 1619)
- St Jakob Dürrenwaldstetten ("All Saints", 1623)
