Matthias Mühling
Matthias Mühling (* 1968 ) is a German art historian , curator and publicist. Since the beginning of 2014 he has been the director of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich .
Life and accomplishments
Mühling studied art history, theater, film and television studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum and at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He was at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt / O. PhD in the research training group “Representation - Rhetoric - Knowledge” of the German Research Foundation on “Words in Painting”. In 2001 he was a visiting fellow in the Poetics and Theory Program of the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University . He wrote numerous art-critical texts for TEXTE ZUR KUNST, monopol , the Frankfurter Rundschau and the Berliner Tagesspiegel . From 2003 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Hamburger Kunsthalle . Since the beginning of 2005, Mühling has been the collection manager and curator for international contemporary art at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and at the Kunstbau in Munich. He teaches at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In December 2012, Mühling was appointed to succeed Helmut Friedel as director of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, whose term of office ended at the turn of the year 2013/14.
