life and career
Wilhelm Scherübl was born in 1961 in the Pongau winter sports resort of Radstadt, where he grew up and completed his school career before he came to Vienna in 1985 and attended the local Academy of Fine Arts . He graduated in the class of Bruno Gironcoli in 1990, after which he was represented for the first time at various exhibitions at home and abroad. A particular strength of Scherübl is the persistent work in and the transparency of the eternal transformation process of nature. His early works mainly include window pictures, which over the years have progressed to ever-increasing object art installations. Here, above all, the optical stimulus of the light or the incidence of light, which he often took into account in later works. In a lecture in the Robert Jungk Library for Future Issues in Salzburg , he emphasized that he was not interested in conveying truths, but rather in trying to “fail at the highest possible level.” In addition to various solo exhibitions that he was in Organized over the years, he has also been involved in numerous other exhibitions since the early 1990s.
But Scherübl's works were not or are only exhibited in galleries and similar institutions; He is also represented in public spaces with numerous works of art and installations. For example in 2000 in the Duff House near Banff in Scotland , at the IGS - International Garden Show 2000 south of Graz (also in the Austrian Sculpture Park ), in 2012 in the Zacherlfabrik in the 19th district of Döbling in Vienna or in 2014 in the Salzburg Museum in of the New Residence . In addition, he has been responsible for the sacred design of various churches, especially since the 2000s; especially for the design of the altar and chancel. The churches in which he was involved with glass work and the design of the chancel include the deanery parish church St. Johann im Pongau (2011), the parish church Puch near Hallein (2012), the Benedictine monastery Altenburg (2013), the Aschau branch church in Feldkirchen Mattighofen (2014), the parish church Bad Sauerbrunn (2015) or the parish church Bischofshofen (2015).
In 2005 he was nominated for his previous achievements together with numerous other artists for the Great Art Prize of the State of Salzburg and subsequently won the prize together with the photographer Margherita Spiluttini . Over the years he has received various scholarships, including one of an average of ten state scholarships for the visual arts in 1994. Other grants include a working grant from the Ministry of Science and Research (1990), a Paris grant from the Ministry for Education and Art (1993), a Budapest grant from the State of Salzburg (1999), an annual grant from the State of Salzburg (2003) or a Krumau grant from Federal Chancellery for Art (2005). Scherübl still lives and works in Radstadt, his hometown. Scherübl, who is also active as a painter and mountain rescuer, runs his studio there on the upper floor of the Radstadt post office.
