Matthias Martini (clergyman)

Matthias Martini (born January 27, 1794 in Haag ; † February 20, 1868 in Trier ) was vicar general of the diocese of Trier from 1847 to 1868 .

Life

From 1815 to 1818 Martini studied at the Trier seminary and was ordained a priest in 1818. In 1827 he became rector of the Cusanus pen in Bernkastel-Kues and also served as pastor in Kues. There he sponsored the abbey library through numerous donations, which can still be proven today by means of provenance notes. In 1842 he became dean in Bernkastel. In 1844 he moved to the diocese administration in Trier as cathedral capital and was appointed vicar general by Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi in 1847 . In the years 1865-1867 he had to take over again and again because of the poor health of the Trier Bishop Leopold Pelldram his official duties.

Martini published some historical studies and served as President of the Society for Useful Research in Trier in 1858 and 1863 . In 1864 he was appointed papal house prelate .

Appreciations

A plaque commemorates Matthias Martini in the cloister of Trier Cathedral . Since 2007, the square below the church in the center of Haag (Morbach) has been named after Vicar General Martini.
