Matthias Schramm (science historian)

Matthias Schramm (born February 6, 1928 in Paris ; † January 24, 2005 in Tübingen ) was a German science historian .

Live and act

Matthias Schramm studied at the University of Marburg / L since the winter semester 1946/47 after taking the Abitur examination in 1946 . Mathematics , Classical Philology and Oriental Studies . He also learned Arabic . After continuing his studies at the University of Frankfurt am Main , he received his doctorate there in 1955 under Willy Hartner . He also completed his habilitation there. After a year-long stay at Oxford University , he was appointed to a newly created chair for the history of science (Institute for the History of Natural Sciences) at the University of Tübingen and retired in 1996. His chair was not filled again. In 2002 Ulm University appointed him honorary professor.

Schramm's research area encompassed ancient, medieval and Islamic history of science as well as the history of modern mathematics. He worked intensively with the Tübingen astronomer Wilhelm Schickard .

In 1966 Schramm was accepted as a corresponding member of the International Academy for the History of Natural Sciences , and since 1971 he has been a full member.
