Rolf-Rüdiger Thiele (born April 29, 1943 in Polepp , Bohemia ) is a German mathematician specializing in the history of mathematics .

Life

Thiele studied mathematics , physics and psychology at the University of Halle and received his doctorate in 1973, then publishing in Leipzig (BG Teubner; S. Hirzel). From 1986 to 2008 he worked at the Karl Sudhoff Institute for the History of Medicine and Natural Sciences at the University of Leipzig . He also made guest stays at the universities of Mainz (substitute professor for the history of natural sciences 1992 to 1994), Darmstadt , Bonn (1995/96) and Toronto .

In 2001 Thiele completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg (Department of Mathematics) with his work From the Bernoullian Brachistochrone to the Calibrator Concept (published in the Collection de travaux de l'Académie internationale d'Histoire des Sciences series , Brepols, Turnhout ). In 2002 he became a private lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Leipzig. Of him in 2004 Lester Randolph Ford Award of the Mathematical Association of America for his discovery of the 24th issue of David Hilbert awarded (from whose estate). He is the Vice President of the Euler Society.

His most important works deal with the biographies of Leonhard Euler , Bartel Leendert van der Waerden , David Hilbert, and Felix Klein ; central topics are analysis , especially the calculus of variations .

In addition to numerous book publications and specialist articles on a wide variety of questions in the history of mathematics, he has published several books on mathematical games (often in collaboration with Konrad Haase ). In his representations he draws on numerous previously unknown sources.
