Matthias Schraudolph

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Schraudolph , also Frater Lucas OSB , (born February 24, 1812 or 1817 in Oberstdorf , † February 6, 1863 in Metten ) was a church painter and Benedictine in the Bavarian monastery Metten near Deggendorf .

biography

Schraudolph, whose first name was also written Mathias, was a brother and student of the more famous history painters Johann von Schraudolph and Claudius Schraudolph (the elder) , "without reaching his role models". When he entered the Benedictine monastery in Metten, he was given the religious name Lucas. His work mainly includes altarpieces and other religious paintings for the Metten Monastery and surrounding country churches. In the wake of the general disdain for 19th century art, many of his works were removed from churches in the second half of the 20th century.
