Claudius Schraudolph the Elder (born October 2, 1813 in Oberstdorf , † November 13, 1891 in Oberstdorf) was a German history painter , lithographer and draftsman for woodcuts .

Life

Claudius Schraudolph the Elder was the brother of Johann and Matthias Schraudolph .

He became a student in the studio of the painter Heinrich Maria von Hess and was able to attend the academy in Munich in 1831 at the age of 19 thanks to his support . Later, at the request of the then Crown Prince Maximilian , Schraudolph traveled to Italy together with the painter Joseph Anton Fischer . a. study the ancient fresco techniques.

After his return Schraudolph worked together with his brother Johann on the fresco cycle in the Allerheiligenhofkapelle as well as in the basilica in Munich (Ludwigskirche). In the residence in Athens Schraudolph made some frescoes and supported his brother Johann in the execution of the paintings in the Speyer Cathedral . After the death of his brother Johann in 1879, he went back to his homeland and decorated numerous country churches there. In 1880 he designed the facade paintings for the Hotel Königshof . In 1884 he painted three altarpieces that have survived to this day for the St Laurentius Church in Göcklingen . The main picture with the martyrdom of St. Laurentius was donated by Franziska Reither, a sister of the former Speyer bishop Konrad Reither .

The illustrator and painter Claudius Schraudolph the Younger was his nephew.
