Matthias Schwierz (born April 16, 1984 in Villingen-Schwenningen ) is a German inline speed skater and speed skater .
Career
In his last year as a junior, Matthias ran a German record over 300 meters at the junior world championships in inline speed skating in Valence d'Agen in 2001 and won the world title. In 2002 he won silver over the same distance as an active player at the European Championships behind the multiple world champion Gregorio Duggento from Italy .
The multiple German track champion was also able to achieve success on the road with the DM title in the half marathon. In the German marathon series, the German Blade Challenge , he finished third in 2006 and second with the ZEPTO Skate Team.
In 2006/07 first experiences were gained on the ice. His potential on the short sprint courses became more and more apparent through continuous performance improvement.
On December 28, 2007, Matthias fell in a review competition. He got a deep cut. Sport was out of the question at first, and the severity of the injury put his sporting career in serious danger, both as a speed skater and as an inline speed skater .
In 2008, after a long recovery, he returned to the role and, to the surprise of many, was able to build on his performance. At the German championships in Jüterbog , he won bronze and the title over 500 meters in his parade discipline over 300 meters. The European Championships 2008 took place in Gera and Matthias ran at a high level again and the connection to the international competition was made again. In the final over 500 meters he had to admit defeat to Alexis Contin by a very thin margin and won silver. As a relay runner, he won the bronze medal with Felix Rijhnen and Nico Wieduwilt .
The speed skating season 2008/09 began with the German individual distance championships, which were also qualifications for the upcoming World Cups. Over 100 meters, Matthias completed his set of medals over this route with gold and won his first title on the ice. In the 2 * 500 meters he ran his personal best in the second run and qualified for the World Cup with 5th place. The World Cup in Kolomna brought him his best successes so far. With an eighth and ninth place in the B group over 500 meters and 7th place over 100 meters, the first international season turned out very promising.
