from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Stein , also Mathias (born January 8, 1660 in Rostock ; † September 10, 1718 ibid) was a German lawyer and professor of law at the University of Rostock .

Origin, training and studies

Matthias Stein was born in Rostock as the son of the businessman and hospital director Walther Stein. He was thus a brother of the lawyer and university professor in Königsberg, Johann Stein , (1661-1725) and the later Königsberg professor and city councilor Konrad Stein (1674-1732).

After attending the Rostock City School , he was already enrolled at the Rostock University in the summer semester of 1673. A second matriculation took place in the winter semester of 1678. In 1683 Stein moved to Königsberg , where he stayed until 1687 and, among other things, accepted a position as court master of two gentlemen from the noble family of Finck von Finckensteins . From 1687 to 1688 he made a trip with two Catholic gentlemen von Lettow from Königsberg via Krakow and Warsaw to Thorn and returned to the University of Rostock in the summer semester of 1689 to take his exams at the law faculty. In the same year he also received his doctorate in law.

academic career

On May 2, 1693, Mathias Stein took over the professorship of law (Professor ordinarius codicis) after 7 years of free time and thus succeeded Jacob Lembke . Four years later, she married Katharine Margarethe Wolff (1674–1714), the daughter of Professor Franz Wolff , but the marriage remained childless. After leaving the university, Johann Christian Petersen took over his position. Most importantly, the funeral programs written for Stein emphasize his tireless manpower and praise the talent he demonstrated in the administration of the scholarships, academic library, and other affairs.
