Johann Stein (born November 17, 1661 in Rostock , † October 21, 1725 in Königsberg (Prussia) ) was a German lawyer.

Life

Stein's father was the merchant and hospital manager Walther Stein and his wife Anna, daughter of the merchant Jakob Hinckelmann. He is thus an older brother of the later Königsberg professor and city councilor Konrad Stein (1674-1732) and the younger brother of the later professor at the University of Rostock Matthias Stein (1660-1718). In September 1673 he began studying at the University of Rostock and continued on July 21, 1678 at the University of Greifswald . In 1680 he returned to the University of Rostock, where he disputed under Johann Sibrand (1637–1701). In 1683 he continued his studies at the University of Königsberg . Here he was accepted among the legal candidates in 1689 and disputed as such under Theodor Pauli de bonis naufragorum .

After he received his doctorate in law on June 20, 1690, he was appointed associate professor of law. In 1694 he was promoted to third full professor, and in 1712 he became a tribunal advisor and councilor at the Samland consistory . In 1713 he took over the second full professorship, in 1716 he became the first full professor at the Königsberg Faculty of Law and in 1725 official of the Samland Consistory. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1713, 1717, 1721 and 1725 .
