Johann Sibrand (the younger)

Johann Sibrand (the younger) (born March 13, 1637 in Rostock ; † April 17, 1701 ibid) was a professor of morality and law at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Johann Sibrand was born as the son of the state lawyer Heinrich Sibrand and as the grandson of the Rostock professor Johann Sibrand (the elder) (1569–1638) Sibrand attended school in Stralsund from 1655 to 1657 and studied from 1657 first in Greifswald and Rostock, and 1658 in Leipzig and then in Strasbourg until 1660 .

Subsequently, Sibrand toured Switzerland , France and Holland until 1661 . In 1661 he entered the service of a Herr von Gyldenstern as court master and stayed as such in Frankfurt (Oder) and Königsberg . In 1664 he traveled to Uppsala and in 1666 returned to Rostock to take his law exam and obtain a Dr. juris to get a doctorate.

academic career

On January 18, 1670, Johann Sibrand (the younger) was appointed full professor of morals by the Rostock City Council, succeeding Heinrich Dringenberg , who held the professorship from 1654 to 1666. At the beginning of September 1674, Sibrand resigned from this professorship for ethics, in which his brother Hermann Sibrand succeeded him, and was appointed Professor of Law by Duke Gustav Adolf . His predecessor in office was Christian Woldenberg, who died in the same year .

On April 27, 1669, Johann Sibrand married Barbara Carstens, the daughter of the Lübeck syndic and Lauenburg chancellor Joachim Carstens .

Sibrand's son was Joachim Heinrich Sibrand , who in 1701 also became a professor at the University of Rostock.
