Kepser graduated from the humanistic Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich and then studied German, psychology and philosophy for teaching at high schools at the Ludwig Maximilians University as well as in Eichstätt and Tübingen . After five years of teaching as a high school teacher (German, computer science) and school psychologist in Dillingen an der Donau, he was seconded to the University of Würzburg in 1996 to the chair of Ulf Abraham for the purpose of a doctorate . The dissertation (1998) was the first didactic monograph on the topic of "Computers as a New Medium in German Classes". Afterwards Kepser was initially (1998-2004) as a teacher in the university service at the German Department of Education Freiburg busy. In 2004 he was appointed professor at the University of Bremen , where he in addition to research and teaching 2008- 2012 Dean was and 2012-2013 Vice Dean of the Faculty of 10th

His publications on the theory and practice of literary didactics, comics / graphic novels, picture books, digital games and, above all, film (various genres) in the classroom, as well as computer-based language teaching and didactics of spelling accompanied the development of media-reflective German didactics over many years.

A research project on the acquisition of orthography carried out in cooperation with the University of Potsdam ( Hans G. Müller ) resulted in the development of a free-of-charge orthography and competence trainer with which spelling can be taught and learned interactively.

For the professional association Symposion Deutschdidaktik (SDD) he was involved as vice chairman from 2008 to 2010. During this time he organized the 18th SDD at the University of Bremen, with the subject of technical learning: clarifying subjects - developing skills . From 2015 to 2019 he was first chairman of the media group in the SDD.
