Matti Goldschmidt (born July 18, 1951 in Graz ) is an Austrian-Israeli choreographer and author. He is particularly concerned with Israeli folk dance .

Life

Goldschmidt grew up predominantly in Germany and emigrated to Israel in January 1976, where he started dancing in the Ma'agan Micha'el kibbutz near Mosche Pinkas. He continued his original hobby in Haifa with Bentzi Tiram and with Jossi Abuhav ( Be'er Scheva ) and in Jerusalem with Eddi Sasson.

In 1979 he graduated from the teacher training college in Jerusalem under the direction of Bracha Dudai, the so-called Ulpan , training to become a dance master for Israeli folk dances. At the same time, he studied computer science and the history of Islamic countries at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and, after completing his studies, worked as a programmer and systems analyst in Israel, New Zealand and Germany. In 1983 he completed another one-year didactic course in dance at the same university under the direction of Cyrelle Foremann and Shulah Bareqet.

In 1988 Goldschmidt took a first position as a dance teacher in Wellington (New Zealand), the following year he went back to Germany and took over dance lessons at the youth and cultural center of the Israelite Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria , which he still holds today (as of the 2nd quarter of 2019 ) directs. In 1992 he was the initiator of the establishment of the ITH Israelisches Tanzhaus eV association , which he has chaired since the beginning, in order to popularize Israeli folk dance in German-speaking countries. On November 24, 2017, the ITH was honored with a certificate for its 25th anniversary by the Lord Mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter , for "his contribution to the maintenance of folk dance".

Since 2012 he has been chairman of the “Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Tanz in Bayern” (State Working Group on Dance in Bavaria) and has been its deputy chairman since 2006. For this LAG he has been organizing the nationwide event Jugend tanzt every two years since 2012 and now for the fifth time, in which well over 550 dancers from the amateur and popular dance sector take part.

Goldschmidt wrote several books and numerous articles on Israeli folk dance, e.g. B. in the Leipziger Folksblatt , in the Folker (magazine) or the former association periodic dance of the German Federal Dance Association (DBT), sporadically for the specialist periodical Rokdim, which appears in Tel Aviv in Hebrew and English. As a journalist, he wrote mainly for the Jüdische Zeitung (Berlin) from 2006–2012 , and from 2014 onwards, rather irregularly, for the Jüdische Rundschau .

He created a number of dances himself, including Yam Adonai or Ha-Aviv Tzokheq and a pair version of Or ha-Ganuz . Since 1983 he has been a member of the union-affiliated "Irgun ha-Madrichim", the association of dance masters and choreographers for Israeli folklore dances in Israel.
