Maurentius Sofus Viðstein

Maurentius Sofus Viðstein (born December 10, 1892 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † May 17, 1971 ibid) was a Faroese publicist ( Sosialurin ) and co-founder of the social democratic party ( Javnaðarflokkurin ).

Maurentius was the son of Christina, geb. Joensen from Selatrað and J. Poul Andreas Jacobsen (Dia við Stein) from Tórshavn. He was married to Helga, geb. Hansen from Nólsoy . Viðstein went to sea and was a worker until he became a journalist and printer.

1928-1936 he sat as a member of the Faroese parliament, the Løgting . 1925–31 he was chairman of the Faroese trade union ( Føroya Arbeiðarafelag ), 1925–34 editor-in-chief of Føroya Sosialdemokrat (now Sosialurin ) and 1926–36 first chairman of the Faroese Social Democrats.

Viðstein was a supporter of the 3rd International and broke with his party in 1936, which was based on Scandinavian social democracy. 1939–43 he was the editor of the newspaper Nýtt land í Dagblaðnum and from 1947 until his death editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dagblaðið .
