Maurice George Carter (born April 24, 1913 in London , † April 2000 in Hurley, Berkshire ) was a British film architect , for over four decades one of the leading chief designers of English cinema.

Life

Carter had studied at the Royal Society of Art Masters and worked as an interior decorator before joining the film at the age of 21. After three years of assistant work at Islington Studios, he was brought in in 1937 as one of several assistant film architects for Alfred Hitchcock's spy thriller A Lady Vanishes. Until the middle of World War II, Carter continued to assist with some not insignificant productions, including Carol Reed's anti-Nazi drama Night Train to Munich and the historical material The Young Mr. Pitt . Until the end of the war, Carter was only responsible for another top production in English cinema, the costume drama The Lord in Gray .

In 1945 he became chief architect with sole responsibility. Carter's specialty were so-called 'period' fabrics, films with a historical, costumed and set background such as Lancelot, the daring knight , Becket , Genghis Khan and Queen for 1000 days .

Maurice Carter, who was nominated three times for an Oscar , was the founder of the British film architects' association, the Guild of Film Art Directors, and was also involved in the development of the British version of the rear projection. He lived in Buckinghamshire on the Thames and died in Berkshire.
