Maurice Norman (born May 8, 1934 in Mulbarton , Norfolk , England ) is a retired English football player . For the English national team , he completed a total of 23 international matches and was mainly used at the 1962 World Cup in Chile .

Athletic career

Norman, who played in the central defensive position as a so-called "center-half", began playing football after finishing school at FC Mulbarton and the Wymondham Minors before he was then signed by Norwich City . The physically strong defender made his debut for the club at the age of 20 before joining Tottenham Hotspur in London just eight months later - in November 1955 - for a fee of £ 28,000 .

There he developed into a player whose strengths existed in both tackling and creative game building. The highlight of his time for the "Spurs" was winning the double from the English championship and the FA Cup . When he was able to defend the cup with his team the following year, he played his first international match against Peru on May 20, 1962 . After the successful debut, in which England won 4-0, he was directly nominated for the upcoming World Cup tournament.

At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, Norman first played in all three group matches and then faced the reigning world champion from Brazil in the quarter-finals with his team . After half an hour after a corner kick he lost the header against the much smaller Garrincha , who scored the goal to make it 1-0 for the South Americans. Ultimately, England lost the game 3-1 and was eliminated from the tournament.

Another triumph followed when Norman moved into the final with Tottenham in the 1962/63 European Cup Winners' Cup and became the first British club to win the title there in Rotterdam with a 5-1 win over Atlético Madrid . Further trophies were subsequently denied Norman and despite his numerous appointments for the English national team until 1964, he could not add any more to his 23 appearances.

In 1967 Norman announced his retirement from active sports. He still lives in seclusion near Felixstowe to this day .
