Maurice Patrick Sheehy (* 1928 in Dublin ; † August 24, 1991 ibid) was an Irish classical philologist , palaeographer and church historian . He was most recently Professor of Paleography and Late Latin at University College Dublin .

Life

Maurice Sheehy first studied at University College Dublin, later also in France and Italy .

Maurice Sheehy earned particular merit with the publication of the two-volume Pontificia Hibernica , a monumental work, which in a critical edition of almost 500 papal letters addressed to Ireland from John IV (640) to Alexander IV (1261) either completely or at least summarizing presented and commented in detail. The majority of the texts were based on the Vatican registers from 1198 to 1261, but Maurice Sheehy also evaluated numerous manuscripts in Armagh , Dublin, Cambridge and on the European continent itself. In 1963 he received the Irish Prize for Historical Research at his university for the first part of the work.

When Frank O'Connor died in 1966 , he had not yet completed the second volume of his autobiography. Maurice Sheehy, who had known Frank O'Connor personally since 1963, examined all the traditional drafts and texts so that he was able to publish My Father's Son by Frank O'Connor in 1968 . A year later he published a commemorative volume on Frank O'Connor, in which many of his friends and colleagues participated.

At the same time, Maurice Sheehy began work on a new edition of the Collectio Canonum Hibernensis , as the version published by Hermann Wasserschleben in 1874 and 1885 only takes one of the reviews into account and has therefore not been in line with the current state of research for a long time. Preliminary work was already carried out here by Joseph C. Wey at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto , but he could not continue this after he took over the office of Canadian provincial superior of the Congregation St. Basil in 1961 . Maurice Sheehy presented the first results of his work on this project in 1968 at a conference on canon law in Strasbourg . Further work followed in 1982 and 1987, but he could not finish his work due to his early death.
