Mauro Politi (born  September 13, 1944 in Fabrica di Roma ) is an Italian lawyer and diplomat who is currently one of the most renowned legal scholars in his home country in the field of international law . He has been a professor at the University of Trento since 1986 and was a member of the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2009 . He was the first judge from Italy to work at this court.

Life

Mauro Politi was born in Fabrica di Roma in 1944 and studied law at the University of Florence in 1966 . After a research stay at Columbia University , he worked in the Italian legal system from 1969 to 1972 as a judge in Florence and 1972 in Oristano , from 1972 to 1975 as a public prosecutor at the Milan Youth Court and from 1975 to 1983 as a judge in Milan. In addition, he worked from 1976 to 1979 as assistant professor for international private law at the University of Cagliari , from 1979 to 1986 as assistant professor for international law at the University of Urbino and from 1986 to 1990 as associate professor and from 1990 as full professor for international law at the University of Trento .

From 1986 he was a member of the delegations in his home country to various international conferences. In 1993 he took part in the conference in Vancouver , in the context of which the legal basis of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was drawn up. In 1995/1996 he was a member of the Italian delegation to the United Nations Security Council . From 1992 to 2001 he acted as legal advisor to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and was actively involved in the negotiations on the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). During the Rome conference , at which this agreement, known as the Rome Statute , was signed in 1998 , he was the coordinator for children's affairs in armed conflict .

In addition, from 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the Italian delegation to the preparatory commission for the ICC. In 2001 he was elected to the list of ad litem judges for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia by the General Assembly of the United Nations . Two years later, he was appointed judge at the newly established International Criminal Court, where he was assigned to the Pre-Trial Department. He fulfilled the requirements formulated in the Rome Statute for the qualification of candidates in the area of criminal and criminal procedural law (candidate list A) as well as international law (candidate list B) and was nominated and elected for list B. The duration of his term of office was six years.

In 2005, Mauro Politi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
