Maurus Schinnagl
Maurus Schinnagl OSB (born February 19, 1800 in Neulerchenfeld , today a district of Vienna ; † December 28, 1871 in Vienna; actually Josef Schinnagl ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic schoolboy .
Life
Schinnagl, the son of a scribe, initially belonged to the Piarist Order for a few years , but entered the Viennese Schotten Abbey in 1824 , where he was ordained a priest in 1825. From 1821 to 1825 he studied theology at the University of Vienna , followed by a degree in classical philology . From 1825 to 1831 he was prefect of the choir boys and 1830/1831 preacher. From 1826 Schinnagl taught, first as a supplement , from 1831 to 1869 as a professor, Latin and German at the Schottengymnasium .
Schinnagl achieved particular importance as the author of several textbooks for Latin lessons, which were used for decades at many Austrian grammar schools . He followed a natural teaching method, according to which the students should gain fluency in it from the beginning through the practical use of the language. For his services, Schinnagl received the Golden Cross of Merit with the Crown in 1858 .
