Lorenzo Mavilis
Lorenzo Mavilis or Lorenzos Mavilis ( Greek Λορέντζος Μαβίλης , born September 6, 1860 in Ithaka ; † November 29, 1912 in Drisco near Ioannina ) was a Greek scholar, poet, chess composer , parliamentarian and freedom fighter.
Life
Lorenzo Mavilis lived mainly in Corfu . He studied law in Athens from 1877 and later lived in Germany for twelve years, where he completed his studies a. a. continued in Munich and Freiburg. In Freiburg he was a member of the Corps Suevia . His subjects also included philology and philosophy . He was strongly influenced by the writings of Immanuel Kant and Arthur Schopenhauer . In addition, Mavilis learned Sanskrit , Indian , Latin , German , Italian , French , English and Spanish . In 1896 he took part in the revolution in Crete as a volunteer and was wounded. From 1910 he was a member of parliament for Corfu. Mavilis was killed in the 1912 war in Drisco near Ioannina.

As a poet, he wrote 58 sonnets and novels and worked extensively as a translator. His poetic work is assigned to the Ionic school. He translated the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Schiller , Ludwig Uhland , George Gordon Byron , Schelley Tennyson, Dante Alighieri and Giacomo Leopardi .
Chess art
During his studies in Germany, Mavilis was a member of the Academic Chess Club Munich, where he worked as Dr. Greco appeared. He participated in numerous local tournaments in Munich, as well as in the major tournaments in Frankfurt am Main in 1887 and in Breslau in 1889 , as well as in the Bavarian Chess Congress in Regensburg in 1890, which Mavilis won with 6.5 out of 9 in front of Kürschner and Steif.
Mavilis is considered the first important Greek chess composer . His oldest known assignments date from the 1890s.
