history

Mughal Shah Mosque

The name Mawlamyaing means something like "destroyed eye". The legend goes that a prince of the Mon lost an eye here.

Mawlamyaing was the first capital of British Burma between 1826 and 1852 after the coast of Tenasserim (now the Tanintharyi Division ) was conquered together with Arakan (now the Rakhine State ) and annexed to the British Empire with the Treaty of Yandabo. There were a large number of British citizens here, mostly engaged in the extraction and trade of natural rubber . Most families have returned to the UK or moved to Australia in recent times . During his years in Burma, George Orwell served as a police officer here.

religion

Mawlamyaing is the seat of the Mawlamyaing diocese .

In Mawlamyaing, the Gyaing and Attayan rivers flow into the Saluen River, which forms a delta here and is protected by the Bilugyun Island before it flows into the Gulf of Martaban and the Andaman Sea. The city is flanked to the west and east by hills on which old pagodas stand.

economy

Mawlamyaing is famous for its tropical fruits and for its cuisine. This is also expressed in the Burmese saying “ Mandalay for talking, Rangoon for bragging and Mawlamyaing for eating”. The city has many sawmills and rice mills, because rice and teak are brought down to the Saluen .

There used to be an important shipbuilding site here and is still a large harbor area.

traffic

Mawlamyaing is the main gateway to southeastern Burma. The Thanlwin Bridge between Mawlamyaing and Mottama ( Martaban ) in the north is the most important attraction in the area and at the same time the longest road and rail bridge in the country. It extends for more than 3 km over the Saluen River and connects the south of the country with Rangoon.

Mawlamyaing Airport has regular flights to Yangon.
