Max Bastelberger (1851-1916)

Life

Max Bastelberger was born as the son of the regimental quartermaster Josef Bastelberger in Würzburg. He first joined the Bavarian army and took part in the Franco-German War of 1870/1 as a sub-lieutenant. He had to say goodbye in 1874 due to an injury suffered in this war and its consequences. The publication: "The military reforms under Mahmud II, the savior of the Ottoman Empire, a military-historical study" was published during his military service. He then studied medicine and received his doctorate at the University of Strasbourg in 1879 (title of the dissertation: "Experimental testing of the methods used to measure the sense of pressure, including a new, improved method"). In 1884 he became department head of the sanatorium in Eichberg , today Erbach (Rheingau) in the Rheingau-Taunus district .

During this time his interest in butterflies developed. His first lepidopterological publication appeared in 1897. In 1905 Bastelberger moved back to his hometown Würzburg and now devoted himself increasingly to the study of entomology. His list of publications includes 52 scientific papers, mainly on the butterfly group of the Spanner (Geometridae). He described 351 new taxa, mainly species and genera from Taiwan and Africa. The only species that is still valid today and that occurs in Germany and was first described by him in 1897 is Cyclophora quercimontaria . He donated a large part of his collection to the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt / Main . A smaller part of his butterfly collection as well as his library and his notes came to the Zoological State Collection in Munich a little later .
