Max Becker , from 1869 von Becker , (born April 3, 1817 in Karlsruhe ; † February 4, 1884 ibid) was a German engineer who worked in Baden in the field of engineering and railway and hydraulic engineering.

Life

After attending the Lyceum and Realschule in Karlsruhe, Becker studied mathematics and engineering at the Polytechnic there . In 1839 he passed the state engineering examination with "very good". He worked for a short time as an assistant at the Polytechnic and as a construction manager for the Elz and Dreisam canal works at Riegel until he was appointed to the engineering school of the Polytechnic in 1841 to relieve his teacher Franz Keller , where he was finally appointed professor in 1845.

On May 22, 1847, he married Sophie Wielandt from Karlsruhe. Two of the four sons from this marriage died as children.

Becker was more of a practitioner than a teacher, so he gave up his professorship in 1855 and joined the Grand Ducal Baden water and road administration responsible for railway construction as a district engineer, where he was appointed to the board of the Rastatt Inspection in 1858 and was appointed construction councilor in 1860 and senior construction councilor in 1871 . In 1876 he was appointed as an extraordinary member of the General Management of the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways, founded in 1872, to manage the larger railway and hydraulic structures in Baden, and to supervise the construction of privately built but state-run railway lines such as the Durlach-Eppinger Railway .

In addition to his actual professional activity, Becker took on numerous tasks and offices, especially in Karlsruhe: since the 1840s, head of the Karlsruhe Trade Association, which made him an honorary member in 1858; from 1860 member and later board member of the examination commission for engineers; 1860 member of the federal commission for the introduction of a uniform system of measurements and weights; 1870–1877 member of the city council and then the local health council; from 1879 member of the Protestant parish assembly.

Becker published, among others, various books “Executed Constructions of Engineers” to supplement the overall title “Handbook of Engineering Science”. Becker received numerous honors: 1861 Civil Order of Merit of Adolph von Nassau , 1862 Royal Prussian Order of the Crown, 3rd Class, 1865 Knight's Cross of the Zähringen Order of the Lion (plus the Oak Leaves in 1876 ), 1867 Royal Bavarian Order of St. Michael and 1869 Knight's Cross, 1st Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , with which the personal title of nobility ( ennoblement ) was connected.
