Max Cremer (born March 11, 1865 in Uerdingen , † May 22, 1935 in Munich ) was a German physiologist .

Life

Max Cremer came from a merchant family near Düsseldorf and first studied medicine. After obtaining his doctorate in 1887 and his license to practice medicine in 1888, he studied mathematics and natural sciences for another 8 semesters in preparation for the profession of physiologist. Subsequently he was an assistant at the Physiological Institute in Munich , where he qualified as a professor in 1893 and was appointed professor in 1901. Appointments to Cologne in 1909 and to Berlin in 1911, where he retired in 1933. In 1909 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

His children also became important scientists, daughter Erika Cremer professor for physical chemistry at the University of Innsbruck, son Hubert Cremer professor for mathematics and large computer systems at RWTH Aachen and son Lothar Cremer professor for technical acoustics at TH Berlin.

His contribution to the development of the glass electrode is important , in that he laid the foundations for the development of the pH meter in 1906 when he observed that, depending on the acidity of the inner or outer solution, a voltage exists on glass membranes like in a galvanic cell. Building on this, Fritz Haber and Zygmunt Klemensiewicz developed the glass electrode in 1909, carried out acid / base titrations with it and published their results on January 28th.
