Life
Max Mayrhofer was born on December 20, 1825, the son of the leather manufacturer Joseph Mayrhofer (1783–18 ??), who took advantage of the war economy during Napoleon's time to build a successful family business in the Gallneukirchen market, which was part of the Austrian Empire at the time. As a so-called noble craftsman, he got to know Austria-Hungary , Germany , Switzerland and Northern Italy and got a tannin mill from his father in Haselgraben , not far from Linz, which was built on a piece of land acquired in 1841. From 1853 he expanded, now the shipmaster's son-in-lawIgnaz Mayer , the Lohmühle to a sole leather tannery. Later the production of smeared leather upper was added. In 1863, a total of 15,000 hides worth 52,000 guilders were processed. By 1867, production had already risen to 18,500 pieces worth 64,200 guilders. Due to this good financial situation, Mayrhofer had his residence and the simultaneous leather defeat on the Lower Donaulände enlarged in 1869, creating new jobs. He also had workers' apartments built for the new workers. At the beginning of the 1880s, the factory ensemble already consisted of a Lohstampfe, a white tanner whale, a leather whale and a Knoppernmühle, all of which had an overshot water flow. The writer , poet , painter and educator Adalbert Stifter , who has lived in the neighborhood since 1848 , was considered a close friend of the Mayrhofer family. After he retired in 1891, Max Mayrhofer died on March 28, 1895 at the age of 69 in Linz. Before his death, he handed over his well-founded company to his sons Josef and Moritz Mayrhofer, who expanded the company, which existed until 1970, and also equipped it with machines. The dry barn of the leather factory on Leonfeldner Straße 328 in the cadastral community of Katzbach in the St. Magdalena district of Linz is now a listed building .
